Use of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Educational Assistant and Its Relationship with Learning Programming among Technical High School Students

Abstract

This study determined the relationship between the use of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based educational assistant and programming learning among technical high school students. A non-experimental cross-sectional correlational design was adopted with a sample of 27 second-year informatics students from the Municipal Educational Unit "San Francisco de Quito", Ecuador. A self-administered digital questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale (Cronbach's α = 0.945) was applied, complemented by academic averages from the last term. Bivariate analysis used Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (ρ).

Descriptive results indicated that 59.3% of students reported high AI use, positively associated with perceived improvement in programming skills (51.9% high in both dimensions) and motivation (44.4% high). Correlational analysis showed no statistically significant relationships between AI use dimensions and objective academic performance (ρ = 0.138 for exam average; ρ = −0.052 for projects; p > 0.05). The only strong and significant correlations were between frequency of use and perceived skill improvement (ρ = 0.792; p < 0.01) and motivation (ρ = 0.612; p < 0.01).

It is concluded that the AI assistant acts as a motivational catalyst and enhances self-perception of competencies; however, its impact on grades requires intentional pedagogical integration, teacher support, and overcoming contextual barriers in the Ecuadorian setting.
