Abstract

This study seeks to analyze the contribution of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) to the reconfiguration of territorial development. It presents a case study conducted in the parish of Miguel Egas Cabezas, located in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador. The research begins with a critique of the dominant economic model that served as the basis for its formulation: growth, accumulation, and competitive integration linked to the logic of the global market, which has contributed to increasing territorial inequalities, structural dependency, and extractivist processes. Within this framework, the SSE emerges as an ally in promoting the expanded reproduction of life, sustainable development, and alternative forms of inclusive community-building processes.

To achieve this objective, a mixed exploratory-descriptive methodological approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews, documentary analysis, focus groups, participant observation, and descriptive statistics. The study included nine family units integrated into eight active SSE associations.

The results highlight that solidarity-based practices strengthen local productive linkages, diversify household incomes, and establish internal redistributive mechanisms based on cooperation and reciprocity. Likewise, agroecological practices and organizational forms linked to the Kichwa worldview were identified, connecting production with environmental care. However, structural challenges persist due to poverty, limited access to financial services, and environmental degradation. The study concludes that the SSE represents a partial yet significant alternative for achieving more equitable, resilient, and sustainable territorial development in rural Andean contexts.
