Abstract

This research analyzes the impact of family disintegration on the criminal recidivism of inmates at the El Inca Social Rehabilitation Center, located in the city of Quito, Ecuador. The study is based on the need to understand how the absence of affective, emotional, and social support during imprisonment limits the rehabilitation and social reintegration processes established by the Constitution of the Republic of Ecuador and the Comprehensive Organic Criminal Code (COIP). A qualitative research approach was employed, including a doctrinal review, normative analysis, interviews, and a case study. The findings reveal that the breakdown of the family unit constitutes a factor that increases the emotional vulnerability of incarcerated individuals, thereby weakening their reintegration process and increasing the risk of recidivism. Furthermore, the study identified that the Ecuadorian prison system faces structural limitations resulting from overcrowding, insufficient rehabilitation programs, and limited psychological and family support services. It is concluded that strengthening public policies aimed at promoting family bonds and comprehensive rehabilitation is essential to reducing criminal recidivism rates and ensuring effective social reintegration.
