Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia in childhood and adolescence is an underestimated public health problem in Santo Domingo, with an impact on neurocognitive development and school performance. The objective was to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors in children and adolescents attending the Assembly of God Church. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in 2025, with consecutive sampling of 132 participants (children <5 years and adolescents up to 17 years). Anemia was defined according to age- and altitude-adjusted hemoglobin levels in accordance with the World Health Organization. The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia was estimated at 22.0%, and strong associations were identified with the main determinants: low intake of foods high in iron (RR≈12.5), family income < SBU (RR≈11.8), low intake of foods containing vitamin C (RR≈10.1), absence or low frequency of supplementation (RR≈8.0–8.2), and ≤3 main meals/day (RR≈7.0). Children showed greater vulnerability than adolescents (RR≈6.75), while unimpeded access to healthcare acted as a preventive determinant (RR≈0.10). The observed prevalence classifies the problem as moderate and supports screening with hemoglobin plus hematimetric indices, with confirmation by serum iron. A practical prevention guide was implemented, aligned with international and national standards, focused on optimizing dietary iron intake, enhancing its bioavailability with concomitant vitamin C consumption, promoting targeted supplementation, and reducing barriers to access.
