Abstract

The research aimed to develop an intervention to enhance working memory using cognitive maps within an educational setting. The objective was to refine teaching and learning methods, thereby contributing to improved student academic performance. Consequently, the proposal arose from the need to implement active methodologies that foster the organization, comprehension, and retention of information, overcoming the limitations of traditional methods focused on rote memorization. Methodologically, the study adopted a pre-experimental design involving a group of 29 students in a remedial program. Students participated in an intervention that entailed the frequent creation of cognitive maps throughout the academic semester. The strategy included the weekly production of various types of graphic organizers, continuous teacher support, constant feedback, and formative assessment activities—all designed to strengthen working memory and facilitate meaningful learning. Results indicated a highly positive perception regarding the use of cognitive maps; over 55% of the indicators reflected benefits such as improved information organization, comprehension of complex concepts, knowledge retrieval, enhanced working memory, and a recommendation of the technique to optimize learning. Furthermore, the methodological approach was highly valued for fostering active participation, knowledge structuring, and the development of cognitive skills related to attention, analysis, and problem-solving. In conclusion, the regular use of methods based on mind maps is considered a highly effective educational strategy for strengthening working memory, fostering meaningful learning, and boosting academic performance in educational contexts. Thus, it stands out as an innovative and easy-to-implement instructional tool.
