Abstract

Calorie restriction (CR) is conceived as the lowest energy intake without compromising nutritional status. CR is well known for its adequate systemic implications. However, the small intestine, an organ with a key role in food digestion and absorption, also undergoes a series of morphophysiological adaptations that, although described, have not been studied in sufficient depth. This literature review is conducted to interpret the effects of CR on absorptive structure and function, epithelial integrity, and its relationship with the intestinal microbiota between 2019 and 2024. It is proposed that CR can induce villus elongation, increase barrier nutrient transporters, and favorably modify the intestinal microbiota, but without negatively affecting intestinal function, when studies are conducted under controlled conditions. These data are proposed as a key element in the design of safe nutritional strategies, especially in situations such as obesity, senescence, and the prevention of metabolic diseases.
