Abstract

In a university context marked by high expectations and growing emotional demands, understanding how personal resources relate to professional burnout was key to faculty mental health. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze levels of emotional intelligence and burnout and determine their relationship among university faculty in Guayaquil. A quantitative, descriptive-correlational methodology was used, with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design. A total of 179 teachers participated, who were administered the TMMS-24 for EI and the MBI for burnout. The results showed adequate averages in comprehension (M = 28.08; SD = 7.20) and emotional regulation (M = 28.70; SD = 7.12) and an average average in attention (M = 23.98; SD = 7.81); in burnout, moderate emotional exhaustion (M = 22.24; SD = 12.18), low depersonalization (M = 8.03; SD = 4.09), and high personal fulfillment (M = 29.63; SD = 8.18) were observed. The correlation test indicated an existing but weak and positive association between total EI and burnout (r = 0.167; p = 0.026). It was concluded that, in this sample, EI considered globally did not act as an unequivocal protector against burnout and that its role depended on the work context and the internal configuration of the construct.
