Development of digital competence in Physical Education teachers through virtual learning environments

Abstract

The accelerated digitalization of education, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has made the development of digital skills among teachers imperative. This quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the level of digital competence among physical education teachers in Riobamba, Ecuador, and to analyze the impact of a virtual learning environment (VLE) designed for their development. A pre-reviewed and approved questionnaire was administered to 85 teachers, selected for ease of use rather than random selection, to assess their digital skills before and after an 8-week training program on an e-learning platform called Moodle. The results showed that most people started at a fairly basic level (72.9% in the pre-test), with significant gaps in performing digital tasks and keeping them secure. After the intervention, we saw a significant increase in skills (p < 0.05) in the post-test, with 68.2% of people reaching intermediate or advanced levels. The report notes that EVFs are great places for ongoing teacher training, which aligns with previous research showing that they are highly flexible and effective for honing specific skills. Clearly, combining context-specific digital training programs is key to updating physical education teaching and bridging the technology gap between teachers and technology.
