Abstract

Pesticides are widely used in modern agriculture; however, their excessive use has profound environmental consequences and also affects human health. The objective was to quantitatively identify pesticide consumption in various Latin American countries during specific periods of use. A quantitative, qualitative, descriptive, and critical approach was used. The data came from the regional database. Total pesticide consumption (fungicides and bactericides, herbicides, and insecticides) was evaluated. The information corresponded to Mexico, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru (Latin American countries), and only the years 2010, 2015, and 2020 were considered. In the use of fungicides and bactericides, Bolivia and Peru continuously increased their consumption during the years evaluated. On the other hand, Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador showed a tendency to reduce their application (R2>0.9369), with Ecuador being the lowest consumer (1235.1 tons) in 2020. Regarding herbicides, Bolivia (12,371 tons), Colombia (29,258 tons), and Peru (4,153 tons) increased their use in the last year. Finally, in insecticides, Colombia and Ecuador showed a reduction in consumption, with Colombia having the lowest usage (3,703 tons) during 2020. A significant variation in pesticide consumption was observed, both in the years evaluated, by product type, and by the country studied, confirming variability in the application of sustainability strategies and Good Agricultural Practices. Studies should be conducted to monitor the long-term effects, in order to facilitate strategies for restoring microbial diversity and soil fertility.
