Abstract

This study is situated within the context of population growth and urban expansion, which have increased solid waste generation. Inadequate waste management generates significant environmental problems, including soil, water, and air pollution. In this context, traditional disposal methods, such as incineration or landfilling, are unsustainable. The objective of this study is to analyze the causes, quantify the generation, and estimate the economic losses associated with organic solid waste produced in the urban markets and fairs of the Lago Agrio canton, Ecuador, specifically in the seafood market, the southern market, the open-air market, the popular shopping center, the gastronomic center, and the central market. For the quantitative methodology, surveys were conducted with 140 vendors, selected using stratified sampling. The results revealed that 73.83% consider waste management problems to be minor. Furthermore, 97.20% have never composed, suggesting a low adoption rate of sustainable practices. Analyzing the causes, 50.47% of respondents attributed waste generation to a lack of sales, while the chi-square analysis revealed a significant relationship between age and knowledge about proper waste disposal (p = 0.026), with older age groups exhibiting lower levels of knowledge. It is concluded that waste management in markets faces structural, economic, and educational limitations, thus requiring comprehensive environmental education strategies, adequate infrastructure, and local policies geared toward a circular economy.
