Distribution of Unemployment by sex and Age group In Ecuador: A Comparative Analysis in the Period 2021–2024

Unemployment in Ecuador has become one of the most complex phenomena, influenced by structural inequalities based on gender and age. The objective of this study is to comparatively analyze the distribution of unemployment by sex and age group in Ecuador during the 2021–2024 period, identifying gaps, trends, and associated factors. The research adopts a quantitative approach and a descriptive-comparative design, using secondary data from the National Survey of Employment, Unemployment, and Underemployment prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC).
The population consisted of the country's economically active population (EAP), with a nationally representative probability sample. Analytical methods and statistical techniques, including compensation, are applied to examine the relationship between unemployment rates and sociodemographic variables. The results indicate that, although the national unemployment rate decreased from 5.2% in 2021 to 3.7% in 2024, significant gaps persist. Women have higher unemployment rates than men, reflecting a labor market structured under a male model. Furthermore, youth unemployment (15–24 years) is projected to exceed 40% in 2024, demonstrating a negative correlation with the overall rate, suggesting a phenomenon of labor substitution.
In contrast, middle-age groups (35–64 years) show positive correlations, reflecting vulnerability to age discrimination. It is concluded that unemployment in Ecuador is due to structural and social causes, necessitating the implementation of inclusive labor policies that promote gender equality, youth integration, and labor reintegration for adults.
