Abstract

Sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy dietary patterns represent priority public health concerns among school-aged populations, due to their direct impact on students’ health and psychosocial development. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the impact of a school-based football program integrated with nutrition education on students’ healthy lifestyle habits and psychosocial development. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design, without a control group. The sample consisted of 90 high school students aged between 14 and 18 years who completed both phases of the assessment. The intervention involved the implementation of systematic school football sessions complemented by contextualized nutrition education workshops, carried out during regular school hours. Data were collected using a healthy habits questionnaire with a Likert-type scale, along with measures related to physical activity practice, nutrition, hydration, sleep habits, health perception, and overall health status. The data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistical procedures. The results indicated relevant improvements in students’ participation in physical activity, levels of motivation toward sports practice, and preference for active recreational behaviors. In addition, favorable changes were observed in dietary quality, water intake, sleep patterns, and in students’ perception of the relationship between nutrition, health, and academic performance. It can be concluded that the school football and nutrition education program supports the use of sport-based education methodologies as an effective pedagogical strategy for promoting healthy lifestyle habits and fostering holistic health development within the educational process, highlighting the school’s role as a key facilitator of health promotion.
