Abstract

Ventilation in confined spaces is a fundamental control measure for ensuring worker safety and maintaining adequate air quality during industrial operations. These environments are characterized by limited access, insufficient natural ventilation, and a high probability of hazardous atmospheric conditions, including the accumulation of toxic gases, flammable vapors, and oxygen-deficient atmospheres, which significantly increase occupational risks and may lead to serious accidents, occupational illnesses, or fatalities. The objective of this article is to analyze the importance of ventilation in confined spaces and evaluate optimization strategies aimed at reducing workplace hazards and improving air quality. The study was conducted through a descriptive bibliographic review based on international regulations, scientific articles, and technical documents related to industrial safety and occupational hygiene. The findings indicate that the implementation of mechanical ventilation systems, combined with continuous gas monitoring and safe work procedures, effectively controls airborne contaminants, enhances air renewal, and maintains safe oxygen concentrations. Furthermore, the proper selection, design, and positioning of ventilation equipment directly influence the efficiency of atmospheric control systems. The analysis also highlights that ventilation optimization contributes to the prevention of explosions, toxic exposures, and oxygen-deficient conditions. It is concluded that an efficient ventilation system is an essential component of confined space risk management, contributing significantly to worker health protection, accident prevention, and compliance with occupational safety and health standards.
