Abstract

The increase in insecurity associated with the internal armed conflict in Ecuador highlights the need to understand the psychological processes related to anxiety in community populations. The present study aimed to analyze the relationship between experiential avoidance and anxiety levels among residents of neighborhoods in southern Quito. A quantitative, correlational, non-experimental, cross-sectional design was implemented with a sample of 102 participants selected through non-probability convenience sampling. For data collection, the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and an insecurity perception questionnaire developed for the present study and validated through expert judgment were administered. The statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, and Spearman’s correlation. The results show a very strong and statistically significant positive correlation between experiential avoidance and anxiety levels (ρ = .862; p < .001). Likewise, participants reported high levels of perceived insecurity, particularly related to concerns about personal and family safety, the influence of news about violence, and decreased sense of tranquility when carrying out daily activities. The findings confirm that experiential avoidance constitutes a psychological process closely related to anxiety in contexts of insecurity. These results provide evidence for understanding mental health from a contextual and functional perspective and may guide the development of interventions aimed at strengthening psychological flexibility in community populations.
