Abstract

This study analyzed the association between the dimensions of perceived social support and emotional exhaustion among informal caregivers of children with disabilities, and examined the explanatory contribution of these dimensions, as well as differences based on marital status and employment status. A non-experimental, cross-sectional, and correlational design was used. Seventy caregivers from the province of El Oro, Ecuador, participated in the study; they were selected through non-probabilistic purposive sampling. The MSPSS and the CBI were administered, and the data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman’s correlations, and hierarchical multiple linear regression. Caregivers with a partner reported greater social support and lower personal exhaustion. Among economically inactive caregivers, the association between social support and exhaustion was significant and inverse (rs = -.654, p < .001), whereas among economically active caregivers, it did not reach significance. The regression model explained 40.8% of the variance in emotional exhaustion: support from significant others was the strongest predictor (β = -.343, p = .018), and the child’s level of dependency was the main risk factor (β = .284, p = .006). It was concluded that support from significant others acts as a protective resource against emotional exhaustion, with implications for the design of psychosocial interventions targeting this population.
