Abstract

With the aim of designing educational units useful for increasing algebraic thinking through problem-solving among ninth-grade MYP students, this research was conducted at the Mushuk Pakari Intercultural Bilingual Community Educational Unit. The purpose of this study was to develop an educational intervention based on teaching tasks that promote the development of algebraic thinking in ninth-grade MYP students, where students address practical mathematical problems within a real-world context. To this end, the approach combined theoretical research in didactics with practical teacher training. On the one hand, we designed teaching tasks with practical activities such as field trips and realistic problems and even made them available to students via the internet. The results revealed a notable improvement in students' understanding and use of algebra, as well as an increase in their attitudes and willingness to participate in activities. This demonstrated that when problems can be situated within a culturally supportive context, their resolution benefits from this very process. It can be concluded that this type of approach to teaching activity, which is based on problem-solving and grounded in ethnomathematics, was a practical strategy to solve traditional teaching problems and the degree of difficulty of mathematical thinking for ninth-grade students in school.
