Abstract

The increase in agricultural production has driven greater consumption of agrochemicals to improve crop yields; however, this situation has generated problems such as soil degradation, water pollution, and biodiversity loss. In this context, the study sought to identify trends and variations in the use of these agricultural inputs in different Latin American countries. The objective was to evaluate the intensity of fertilizer use and pesticide consumption in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, and Peru during the period 2018–2023, in order to recognize potential environmental implications arising from the use of agrochemicals. The methodology was developed using a quantitative, qualitative, descriptive, and critical approach. Data were obtained from CEPALSTAT and corresponded to indicators related to fertilizers and pesticides. The analysis considered values expressed in kg/ha and tons/year, as well as trends and statistical variability with a 95% confidence level. The results showed heterogeneous behavior among countries. Colombia and Argentina registered the highest levels of agrochemical use, while Bolivia presented the lowest. Several countries showed a reduction in the intensity of fertilizer use by 2023, although Argentina maintained a sustained increase in pesticide consumption. It was concluded that intensive agriculture continues to represent a significant environmental risk in Latin America, making it necessary to strengthen sustainable agricultural practices and reduce dependence on agrochemicals.
