Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a key tool in the transformation of educational processes, standing out for its ability to personalize learning, automate assessment, and support pedagogical decision-making. This article presents a scoping review based on the PRISMA-ScR framework, aiming to map the scientific output related to AI in educational contexts, with a particular focus on the case of Ecuador. Articles indexed in well-established databases such as Scopus, IEEE Xplore, ERIC, and PsycNET were analyzed, covering the period from 2018 to 2025. The search strategy included keywords such as “artificial intelligence” and “education”, applying thematic and temporal filters. The findings reveal a consistent increase in scientific publications at the global level, especially over the past five years, with China, the United States, and the United Kingdom leading academic output. In the Ecuadorian context, ten articles were identified that explore concrete applications of AI in higher education, focusing on academic performance prediction, personalized learning, generative tools, and automated assessment models. The co-occurrence analysis of keywords reveals a dual focus: technical-computational and psychopedagogical, depending on the database of origin. The discussion highlights both opportunities and challenges for implementing AI in the region, including limited infrastructure, the absence of clear regulatory policies, and the urgent need for teacher training. It is concluded that, although AI holds great potential to revolutionize education, its integration must be critical, ethical, and context-aware to achieve meaningful and sustainable improvements in Latin American educational systems.
