Project-Based Learning and Artificial Intelligence Assistants: Pedagogical Innovation for the Development of Computational Thinking in STEM Environments.

Abstract

This article examines the influence of Project-Based Learning (PBL) supported by AI assistants as an innovative strategy to strengthen computational thinking and problem-solving skills in STEM environments. Using a mixed-methods approach, a quasi-experimental design was implemented in secondary education institutions across three different contexts (urban, rural, and virtual), involving 215 students and 12 teachers. The intervention was refined through four stages: a diagnosis of digital competencies, co-design of interdisciplinary projects, implementation of the projects with the support of AI assistants (ChatGPT and Copilot), and evaluation using analytical rubrics alongside a performance analysis. The findings demonstrate a significant increase in the development of logical thinking, algorithmic creativity, and cognitive autonomy, especially among low-achieving students. In addition, there was an enhancement of the teacher’s role as a cognitive mediator, and the design of personalized learning experiences was recognized. The AI assistants provided immediate feedback, minimized research time, created adaptive teaching resources, and contributed to the systemic transformation of the educational ecosystem through the strategic use of emerging technologies. It is evident that the synergy between Project-Based Learning and Artificial Intelligence not only fosters STEM competencies but also promotes a pedagogical culture centered on innovation, collaboration, and critical thinking—all essential elements of 21st-century education. This model emerges as a promising and sustainable pathway for curricular redesign and the development of citizens capable of addressing real-world problems through interdisciplinary and sophisticated approaches.
