Abstract

The present analysis examines TELL in the twenty-first century: Opportunities and Challenges for the Teaching of English within the framework of Complex Problem Solving and the Systemic Transformation of Education. The research was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, integrating a descriptive quantitative design with qualitative content analysis. English teachers from basic and secondary education levels participated in the study, in which surveys, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations were applied. The methodology allowed the identification of systemic patterns in the pedagogical use of educational technologies, as well as the structural barriers faced by educational stakeholders. Quantitative findings reveal improvements in student motivation, engagement, and immediate feedback achieved through digital platforms and artificial intelligence tools. Conversely, the qualitative results highlight deficits and inconsistencies in technological infrastructure, gaps in teacher preparation, and heterogeneity in digital competencies among educators. Additionally, progress was observed in the implementation of innovative strategies in language education—although still in an emerging phase—particularly through the use of multimodality and collaborative activities within English language instruction. The study demonstrates that TELL not only enhances language learning but also serves as a mechanism for addressing complex educational problems, as it promotes inclusive pedagogical practices and contributes to the transformation of educational ecosystems. It is concluded that the effective implementation of TELL requires strong institutional policies, sustained teacher training programs, and adequate technological conditions to enable genuine systemic transformation. These findings provide a solid foundation for future research on educational innovation and technology-mediated English language teaching.
