Abstract

This work presents an N-1 contingency analysis applied to a 14-bus system with the aim of determining fault-severity ranking and proposing technical solutions to improve operational reliability. Eight random contingency scenarios were evaluated through simulations in GAMS Studio. The contingency index was computed based on the loading of transmission lines and transformers, identifying the most critical events as the outage of transformer 3, line 1–2, and line 6–13. In addition, it was found that the outage of generator G1, although associated with a low index value, causes a total blackout due to its high share in generation. The proposed solutions include uprating generator G2, reinforcing line 9–10, and installing a parallel line to 1–2, achieving significant reductions in severity indices and improving system reliability. The results confirm that a systematic N-1 contingency assessment and the study of selective reinforcement measures support decision-making aimed at optimizing power network operation and reducing risks associated with critical failures. These findings support investment prioritization, preventive maintenance, and future expansion planning.
