Abstract

In children, malnutrition not only affected their immediate nutritional status, but was also associated with an increased risk of developing chronic noncommunicable diseases later in life. The objective of this study was to analyze the association between malnutrition and the risk of developing chronic noncommunicable diseases in children in the city of Puerto López, by evaluating their nutritional status and hematological and biochemical indicators and eating habits related to metabolic disorders. A non-experimental quantitative design methodology was applied to 379 children, using a structured survey and anthropometric, hematological, and biochemical measurements. In the anthropometric assessment, 62.9% had an adequate body mass index, while 17.1% were overweight, 8.6% were obese, and 8.6% were underweight. In the hematological parameters, 100% showed normal hemoglobin, and in the biochemical profile, 100% had glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides within normal ranges, with insulin resistance in 2.9%. In terms of habits, daily consumption of meat (65.7%) and cereals (62.9%) stood out, with lower intake of fruit (54.3%) and vegetables (22.9%). It was also determined that the children's nutritional status did not show a statistically significant relationship with hematological or biochemical parameters or with the nutritional habits evaluated (p>0.05). In conclusion, the child population evaluated presented socioeconomic vulnerability and an unbalanced dietary pattern, factors that were associated with a potential risk of developing chronic noncommunicable diseases. It is recommended that preventive and educational strategies be strengthened in schools and communities.
