Pedagogical innovation through digital gamification: enhancing academic competencies and cognitive skills in higher education

Abstract

The study aimed to evaluate the implementation of digital gamification strategies as a pedagogical innovation and its impact on the development of academic competencies and cognitive skills in higher education students. A descriptive and explanatory investigation with a quantitative approach and a quasi-experimental design was used, observing 25 higher education students at two points in time: pre-test (diagnostic phase) and post-test (evaluation phase). To analyze construct reliability, Cronbach's Alpha was measured, yielding a value of 0.932 in the pre-test and 0.939 in the post-test, representing high construct reliability. However, no significant difference was observed between the scores of 3 (sometimes) and 4 (almost always) in either academic competencies or cognitive skills. Therefore, it was concluded that these improvements did not reach statistical significance, indicating that while gamification positively influences learning, its impact is conditioned by... contextual factors specific to the virtual modality.
