Feminist Economics and Gender Inequality: A Critical Reconfiguration of the Foundations of Economic Theory

This article examines the limitations of traditional economic approaches, particularly neoclassical and Marxist frameworks— in addressing gender inequality, with a focus on the invisibility of domestic and care work. It argues that these limitations are not merely the result of the exclusion of women as a subject of study, but stem from a conceptual structure that separates production from social reproduction, thereby constraining the understanding of economic processes.
The study adopts a qualitative approach based on a critical and documentary analysis of key contributions in feminist economics. Through this analysis, the paper evaluates the scope and limitations of dominant paradigms, while identifying the main theoretical and methodological contributions of feminist economics as an evolving field.
The article proposes that feminist economics should not be understood as a mere extension of economic analysis, but as an epistemological reconfiguration that redefines core concepts such as labor, value, and productivity by placing the sustainability of life at the center of analysis. From this perspective, gender inequality is conceptualized as a structural phenomenon embedded in the very logic of economic organization.
Finally, the paper outlines implications for public policy, emphasizing the need to recognize and redistribute care work and to incorporate life-sustainability criteria into the measurement of well-being, thus contributing to the development of more inclusive and equitable economic models.
