Challenges and pedagogical implications in the relationship between algebraic reasoning and problem solving in 9th grade secondary school students

Abstract

The objective of this study was to explain the challenges and pedagogical implications and the potential impact of a teaching strategy on the relationship between Algebraic Reasoning (AR) and Problem Solving (PS) in 9th-grade high school students. A mixed-methods approach was applied, with a non-experimental research design, field type, and cross-sectional level. The results show that the majority of 9th-grade students from the official institutions of Santa Marta included in the sample are concentrated at RA_N1 and RA_N2 levels, which translates into significant limitations for the development of RP competence. It is concluded that RA is an important tool for RP, as it allows the development of effective strategies and the analysis of solutions; however, it presents challenges and limitations for students who do not have a good understanding of algebraic rules and properties. If RA is not adequately developed, RP is restricted, since RA constitutes a cognitive and operational foundation for facing problematic situations (expressing symbolic relationships, establishing patterns, generalizing results). If a student remains at low reasoning levels, their performance in RP will also be confined to routine tasks or mechanical application of algorithms.
