Abstract

This study aimed to examine and propose teaching methods that promote fundamental motor skills in middle school students in Quito, particularly in the post-pandemic context, considering the effects of isolation and reduced physical activity. The research employed a combined approach, applying a descriptive-analytical paradigm and a non-experimental, cross-sectional design. This allowed for a comprehensive understanding of students' motor development and teachers' perspectives on this process. The study population consisted of 150 middle school students from various schools in Quito. Data was collected using a motor skills observation sheet both before and after the implementation of educational strategies focused on improving skills such as coordination, balance, locomotion, and object manipulation. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with physical education teachers to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences and teaching methods during the post-pandemic period. The findings revealed notable improvements in the development of basic motor skills after the educational intervention, with general coordination and balance showing the most progress, followed by locomotion. On the other hand, object manipulation showed only modest improvements, suggesting a need to strengthen strategies focused on fine motor skills. In summary, the introduction of specially adapted teaching methods, with a focus on physical activity, has a positive influence on the motor development of middle school students in the post-pandemic context. The importance of systematic and consistent intervention to ensure sustained progress is also emphasized.
