Non-communicable neurological disorders: Analysis of the distribution and temporal trend of Alzheimer's disease in various countries of America

The rising incidence rates of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia have led to an increase in public health problems. The objective of this research is to analyze the distribution and temporal trends of Alzheimer's disease in various countries of the Americas between 2010 and 2021. A quantitative, qualitative, descriptive, and critical approach was used; data from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) were employed; the mortality rate calculated per 100,000 inhabitants was analyzed; and the countries evaluated were the United States, Mexico, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Alzheimer's disease and other related dementias in the Americas had a population average of 7.67 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2010, with the United States having the highest rate in both years evaluated (2010 = 65.8 and 2021 = 82.01). Conversely, in 2010 and 2021, the Peruvian and Mexican populations, respectively, had the lowest rates identified in the evaluation. A high proportion of people over 75 years of age died while suffering from Alzheimer's disease in the United States (2010 = 1042.79 and 2021 = 1111.4), compared to other countries. Finally, in all evaluations, the United States, when compared to developing countries, had a high mortality rate among patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's; furthermore, higher mortality was observed specifically among women. Finally, it is recommended that the information presented be considered when planning current and future social and health services, in order to establish a strategy aimed at mitigating the spread of Alzheimer's.
