Impact of Informal Learning of Soft Skills on the Academic Success of Higher Education Students

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of informal learning of soft skills on the academic success of university students from the Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo (UNACH), Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH), and Universidad Técnica de Ambato (UTA). Beyond technical knowledge acquisition, the development of transversal competencies such as effective communication, leadership, teamwork, resilience, critical thinking, and time management is essential for academic adaptation and professional performance.

A mixed-methods approach with a correlational and cross-sectional design was employed, including a stratified proportional sample of 450 students. Data collection involved informal learning questionnaires, soft skills scales, GPA records, and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analyses comprised descriptive statistics, correlations, linear regression, and mediation analysis, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic coding and data triangulation.

Results indicate significant correlations between informal learning and soft skills (r = 0.65, p < 0.001) and between soft skills and academic success (r = 0.72, p < 0.001). The effect of informal learning on academic success occurs predominantly indirectly, mediated by soft skill development (indirect effect = 0.432). Communication and teamwork emerged as the most developed competencies, whereas time management requires further attention.

These findings confirm that informal learning experiences are crucial for fostering soft skills, which in turn enhance academic success. The study provides robust evidence supporting the implementation of structured informal learning strategies in higher education, reinforcing comprehensive student development and professional preparedness within the Ecuadorian context.
